Road Safety around Schools – St John's C of E Primary School

Overview

The Council’s strategic objective in transport planning is to increase the proportion of children who walk or cycle to school. This initiative is intended to alleviate traffic congestion, enhance local air quality, and contribute to improved public health outcomes.

To realise this ambition, it is imperative that walking and cycling are safe and viable modes of travel for children and their families. In alignment with this objective a series of targeted improvements have been identified in the vicinity of St John’s C of E Primary School, Heaton Mersey

Proposed Measures:

A 20mph Speed Limit Zone throughout the area to include the following roads in both directions:

Beaminster Avenue, Beaminster Close, Beaminster Road, Cavendish Road(N), Cavendish Road(S), Freshfield Road, Hawthorn Road, Lyme Street, Mersey Road(N), Mersey Road(S), New Beech Road, Poplar Street, Preinstall Road, Ranworth Avenue, Sunnyfield Road and Thornhill Road(W)&(C).

To further support the implementation; to ensure visibility and compliance, the scheme will include:

• Removing existing Gateway signage from two junctions
• Installing Gateway signage at four key junctions
• Installing repeater signs throughout the zone
• Installing 20mph roundel road markings throughout the zone
• Installing 2 x School Warning signs (Mersey Road junction of New Beech Rd & junction of Thornhill Road)
