Bramhall Park Road Toucan - Consultation
Overview
Stockport Council has successfully bid for funding from Active Travel England to progress the design and implementation of an upgraded route along Ladybrook Valley, between Ladybridge Road and Bramhall Park Road, for use by pedestrians and cyclists.
Construction of this is planned in phases from late 2024 and through 2025 – more information is on our web page here.
The scheme is part of our work with TfGM and Active Travel England to further unlock the health and environmental benefits of active travel. We are delivering a network of fully inclusive routes to make walk, wheel and cycle journeys safer and more attractive, and universally accessible for all.
The works along the Valley provide a missing link in an active travel route between Hazel Grove and Cheadle, with spurs and connections to local destinations and the wider active travel network.
Proposed Crossing – Bramhall Park Road
To further enhance the Ladybrook Valley connection and subject to additional funding, it is proposed to install a new Toucan Crossing on Bramhall Park Road at the access to Ladybrook Valley being upgraded (to a ramp) by the above project.
- A Toucan Crossing is a traffic signal-controlled crossing shared by pedestrians and cyclists. It will be similar to that installed a few years ago on Carrwood Road. The existing shared paths provide onward connection to Ladybrook Valley and Bramhall Park.
- It is also proposed to refurbish the existing steps into the park from Bramhall Park Road, opposite the access to Ladybrook Valley.
- The existing vehicle activated speed sign would be relocated.
- Delivery of the crossing would require the removal of up to 3 large trees from the verge of Bramhall Park Road, on approach to the crossing (opposite the park) - to be confirmed at detailed design. This is to provide safe visibility to and from the crossing in accordance with guidance and standards. We are unable to place the crossing in an alternative location due to constraints associated with the adjacent bridge and available widths needed for the shared paths. We will work with our Arboriculture and Ecology specialists on a landscaping plan for the scheme, which will include some replanting locally to include tree planting if suitable species, sizes and locations can be identified.
