Proposed Parking Restrictions – Bramhall Lane South

Overview

As part of the City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement (CRSTS) Bus Pinch Point program to deliver bus and highway improvements, Stockport Council has drafted highway proposals for the A5102 Bramhall Lane / Bramhall Lane South Corridor between Barnfield Road East and Carrwood Road to address parking issues and improve bus operations along the corridor.

The proposals aim to address the following issues caused by parking along the corridor:

• Parked vehicles, particularly along the narrower sections of the Bramhall Lane / Bramhall Lane South Corridor result in insufficient carriageway width for larger vehicles such as buses to pass when there is opposing traffic which can cause a delay in bus operations.
• Vehicles have also been observed parking on the advisory cycle lanes on the eastern side of Bramhall Lane, between Barnfield Road East and Trinity Gardens, creating an obstruction and road safety issue for cyclists and other road users.
• Footway parking has a significant detrimental impact on pedestrians, particularly the mobility impaired or those with pushchairs.       

The proposals would build upon existing Double Yellow Lines (No Waiting At Any Time restrictions) at various junctions along the corridor and the existing Double White Line system to the south of Broadoak Road and Broadway.                                                                                                                                              

The proposed measures are:

• Double Yellow Lines (No Waiting At Any Time restrictions) are proposed on both sides of Bramhall Lane / Bramhall Lane South from the junction with Barnfield Road East to the junction with Carrwood Road. The proposed restrictions would support existing Double Yellow Line markings that are present at the junctions with Fir Road, Bramhall Park Road/ Broadway, Nevill Road, Grange Road/ Midland Road, Trinity Gardens and Barnfield Road East. On the Bridge Lane arm of the roundabout the restrictions would join with recently implemented restrictions. The recently approved restrictions at the junction of Yew Tree Road with Bramhall Lane would be retained.

• Double Yellow Lines (No Waiting At Any Time restrictions) are also proposed at the junctions of Bramhall Lane / Bramhall Lane South with Carrwood Road, Handley Road, Broadoak Road, Charlestown Road West and Woodsmoor Lane and at the junction of Grange Road with Highfield Road. These restrictions are proposed in order to keep the junctions free of parked vehicles, protecting intervisibility between pedestrians and motorists whilst also ensuring vehicles can negotiate the junctions safely.

• A new Bus Stop Clearway is proposed to cater for demand from buses at the existing stop on the eastern side of Bramhall Lane, to the north of Trinity Gardens.

• The sections of Double White Line system to the south of Broadoak Road and south of Broadway are proposed to be retained. These markings prohibit the stopping or parking of a vehicle except for loading or unloading.
