Stockport Town Centre West – Active Travel
Overview
Introduction
The Stockport Town Centre West project is rapidly changing the face of the Town! New developments have been built at The Interchange, Weir Mill and Platform on King Street West. Stockport 8 at the old bus depot and a new development on Chestergate are planned to be on site in 2026. These developments are all designed to be sustainable with minimum provision of parking and an expectation that residents and visitors will mostly travel by train, bus, walking and cycling.
To support this, we have built a new Interchange and have plans to improve walking and cycling links. Some work has already been completed, including the recent opening of a new pedestrian and cycle link connecting the newly renamed ‘Driver John Axon’ railway bridge with Thomson Street, as well as the completion of another cycle route on Moseley Street in Edgeley.
Other work will be starting soon, including:
• Upgrading the existing pedestrian crossing on Greek Street to a Toucan (shared pedestrian and cyclist) crossing;
• Reinstating Greek Street roundabout with Zebra crossings on Shaw Heath north and south of the roundabout and also on the Greek Street arm;
• Building a new layout for the Wellington Road South / Railway Road junction outside the Town Hall including improved pedestrian crossings and separate cycle crossings. We will also be widening Railway Road to improve traffic movement in
Our Plans
This consultation is about our ambitious proposals which aim to join all this infrastructure up to create a connected network of walking and cycling routes across the Town Centre West area linking the existing and proposed Town Centre West developments, Stockport Station, Hollywood Park, Castle Street, Stockport College and Edgeley Park and providing further improved links to Alexandra Park, Davenport and Adswood.
Part of these works are at Heaton Lane roundabout and in Heaton Norris Recreation Ground which are previously approved schemes. As these works are approved we are not consulting over them again but we have included the plans so you can see how it all fits together. The plans we are consulting over are based on the previous Edgeley Active Travel consultation proposals which have been further developed taking account of comments received, including better linkage to Stockport Station.
The proposed works being consulted on are:
Edgeley Active Travel Corridor - To connect the Trans-Pennine Trail and Stockport Interchange to Stockport Station, Stockport College, Castle Street and Edgeley Park. This scheme includes segregated walking and cycling routes, Sparrow (segregated pedestrian and cycle) and Toucan (shared space pedestrian and cycle) signal crossings.
Hollywood Park Access Improvements - Better access to and through Hollywood Park via junction and path improvements. Includes works to the path from Wood Street to Ealing Road.
The following Cheadle Heath and Adswood Active Travel Links are also being consulted over:
Stockholm Road / Adswood Road Junction - Connecting residential streets via the first CYCLOPS (Cycle Optimised Protected Signals) junction in Stockport with off-carriageway cycling facilities from Adswood to Davenport.
Alexandra Park Access – Improved access to Alexandra Park via junction improvements and crossing improvements at Dale St. Includes upgrades to the Reservoir Road Path.
