Road Safety around Schools – Mellor Primary School

Opens 22 Sep 2025

Closes 13 Oct 2025

Overview

The Council’s strategic objective in transport planning is to increase the proportion of children who walk or cycle to school. This initiative is intended to alleviate traffic congestion, enhance local air quality, and contribute to improved public health outcomes.

To realise this ambition, it is imperative that walking and cycling are safe and viable modes of travel for children and their families.

In alignment with this objective, Traffic Services have been actively addressing concerns raised by schools, residents and elected Members. As a result of these consultations, a series of targeted improvements have been identified in the vicinity of Mellor Primary School.

  • Installation of 9 pencil bollards at the junction of Knowle Road and Longhurst Lane, replacing existing Middleton bollards to better highlight the school’s location.
  • Extension of No Waiting ‘At Any Time’ (Double Yellow Lines) with additional No Loading restrictions (Mon–Fri, 8:15–9:15am and 2:45–3:45pm) (Single Kerb Tabs), on Knowle Road and at the junction with Longhurst Lane, supported by appropriate signage. This aims to keep carriageways clear, improving pedestrian safety and traffic flow.
  • Introduction of No Waiting (Mon–Fri, 8am–5pm) (Single Yellow Line) and No Loading restrictions (Mon–Fri, 8:15–9:15am and 2:45–3:45pm) (Single Kerb Tabs), along with 5 pencil bollards on Longhurst Lane opposite the Knowle Road junction. This will help maintain clear passage for vehicles and safer pedestrian crossings.
  • Remove and replace existing 20mph zone/school signage with 2 - 20mph Zone signs only on Longhurst Lane.
  • Installation of 2 - School Warning Signs on yellow backboards in both directions on Longhurst Lane.
  • Access Protection Markings (H-bars) for selected properties on Longhurst Lane and Knowle Road.
  • Dragons’ teeth road markings at both entrances to the 20mph Zone.
