Mersey Square Improvements
Overview
Background
Over the last few years, Stockport Council has been working towards providing a cohesive network of walking and wheeling routes within the Town Centre, forming part of Greater Manchester’s Bee Network. Several projects including the Interchange, the pedestrian and cycle route along Lord Street, connecting to the Marketplace area, and the ‘Driver John Axon’ foot and cycle bridge linking Thomson Street and Shaw Heath have all been built to support this growth.
Other pedestrian and cycle routes in the area are either currently on site or will be on site soon, including:
• Upgrading the existing pedestrian crossing on Greek Street to a shared pedestrian and cyclist crossing;
• Reinstating Greek Street roundabout with Zebra crossings on Shaw Heath north and south of the roundabout and also on the Greek Street arm;
• Building a new layout for the Wellington Road South / Railway Road junction outside the Town Hall including improved pedestrian crossings and separate cycle crossings. We will also be widening Railway Road to improve traffic movement in this location.
The Mersey Square proposals mark the next milestone as part of the UK’s largest town centre regeneration, building on the huge momentum already reshaping Stockport. Funding for the project has come from Transport for Greater Manchester and United Utilities, with the money secured to create this new look for Stockport.
Mersey Square
When the Interchange was being built, key links were identified to enhance the connectivity for walking and wheeling which included a new shared pedestrian and cycle crossing on the A6 Wellington Road South, which was implemented in Spring 2025 and a route throughout Mersey Square to provide onward connections from the Trans Pennine Trail.
Mersey Square is the final stage of the improvements to be completed and as a result, this engagement exercise presents a proposal to radically transform the area by providing high quality walking and wheeling routes, creating a sense of place for people to socialise and play, and enhancing the setting using sympathetic materials and implementing green infrastructure and Sustainable Drainage Systems (SUDs). The scheme proposes to include the circular seating area, known as the Bear Pit, which is bounded by the existing balustrades and Wellington Road North bridge.
