We have drafted proposals for path improvements to upgrade urban paths within the Borough to cater for use by cyclists, walkers and mobility scooter / wheelchair users. These proposals will support sustainable travel choices and improve safety and access for all users.

As part of these proposals, a scheme is being developed to provide a shared use path linking Arthur Street (to the East) and Arthur Street (to the West) and a new intersecting shared use path linking Bedford Street (to the North) to Bedford Street (to the South). The proposals would improve pedestrian and cyclist access to St. Elisabeth’s Church, St. Elisabeth’s Primary School and Houldsworth Park.

The proposals include:

  • Widening of the Arthur Street path to create a 3m wide shared-use footway cycleway.
  • Relocation of lighting columns to the side of the Arthur Street path.
  • Provision of a new intersecting 3 m shared-use path across the verge connecting Bedford Street (to the north) with Bedford Street (to the south).
  • Provision of shared use signage, bollards and dropped kerbs at the ends of the path.
  • Provision of double yellow lines to prevent vehicles from blocking the dropped kerbs.
  • Replacement of trees removed in the vicinity.
