ITB - Birchvale Drive Estate - 20mph Speed Limit Zone
Overview
Proposed 20mph Speed Limit Zone – Birchvale Drive Estate, Romiley
Stockport Council has adopted a policy of introducing 20mph speed limits within residential areas as part of its commitment to improving road safety and creating safer, healthier neighbourhoods. In support of the Council's wider Road Safety Strategy, which encourages walking, wheeling, and cycling, this area has been identified as one where a reduced speed limit could provide road safety benefits for residents and all road users.
Proposed Measures
- A 20mph Speed Limit Zone covering the following roads in both directions for their entire lengths:
|
Barnfield Road |
Barlow Fold Road |
Birchvale Drive * |
Brabyns Avenue |
Broad Hey |
|
Carlton Avenue * |
Clover Road |
Cornfield Road |
Far Ridings |
Green Croft |
|
Heys Avenue |
Heys Lane * |
Heyworth Avenue * |
Lane Ends * |
Links Road |
|
Longwood Close |
Parklands |
Peaslake Close |
Roundcroft * |
Rushfield Crescent |
|
Stone Mead |
Syke Croft |
Willow Mead |
|
|
To further support the implementation of the speed limit, the zone will feature the following to ensure visibility and compliance:
- Gateway entrance signs at six key junctions*
- Installation of traffic calming speed humps on Broad Hey, Carlton Avenue and Roundcroft (east), to support compliance with the new speed limit.
- Repeater signs throughout the zone
- 20mph road marking roundels
In accordance with policy, Speed Limit Zones should be self-enforcing. Speed humps contribute to achieving this objective, as signage alone may be insufficient, particularly on longer stretches of road where drivers may be more likely to travel at inappropriate speeds.
The implementation of speed humps on Broad Hey, Carlton Avenue and Roundcrfot (E), is necessary to effectively reduce vehicle speeds and to support compliance with the designated 20mph Zone, thereby enhancing road safety and ensuring the effectiveness of the traffic calming measures.
