The Council has an ambition to increase the number of children walking or cycling to school, to reduce congestion on roads, improve local air quality, and support healthier travel choices. In order for this to be achieved, it is important that walking or cycling to school is a safe option for children and their families.

To support this ambition, the Sustainable Transport & Highways Team has secured funding from the City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement programme (CRSTS) to develop proposals to support the existing School Street for St Mary’s School on Broomfield Drive. The City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement is intended to fund small scale improvements for road safety and the promotion of sustainable travel modes.

The proposals include:  

• Proposed one-way operation (southbound) of the service road between Southcliffe Road and Broomfield Drive with a northbound contra-flow cycle lane. This is proposed to address existing conflict between northbound and southbound vehicles along this narrow section and reduce the likelihood of vehicles parking on the eastern footway (commonly known as the pavement). Due to the tight turn into the service road larger vehicles travelling northbound on Reddish Road may no longer be able to turn directly into the service road but an alternative route would be available via Abingdon Road, with parking restrictions proposed to support this.

• Improvements to the footway cycleway connecting the existing Toucan crossing on Reddish Road to Broadstone Hall Road South and Broomfield Drive (bollards have been proposed to prevent unauthorised driving over the footway and prevent footway parking).

• Double yellow lines (No Waiting At Any Time restrictions) are proposed at the junctions of Southcliffe Road / Ambleside Road, Ambleside Road / Coniston Road and Coniston Road / Reddish Road Service Road in order to keep these junctions free of parked vehicles, protecting intervisibility between pedestrians and motorists while also ensuring vehicles can negotiate the junctions safely.

• Provision of a raised road surface at Broomfield Drive and Southcliffe Road at their junctions with Reddish Road to reduce vehicle speeds and provide pedestrians with a level crossing point.

• The footway at the junctions of Broomfield Drive and Southcliffe Road with Reddish Road are proposed to be built out to tighten the junction radii and encourage lower vehicular speeds.

• Proposed highway measures on Broomfield Drive include footway build outs at the junction with Broom Avenue (to be supported by the provision of bollards to prevent footway parking), provision of a vehicle dropped crossing to replace the existing radii junction for No 30-44 Broomfield Drive and provision of a dropped kerb at the eastern end of Broomfield Drive to better accommodate pedestrian movements.

• Footway build outs and provision of tactile paving are proposed at the junction of Broadstone Hall Road South / St Mary’s Drive to improve the provision for pedestrians and encourage lower vehicular speeds.
