A6 Provision of Lay-bys
Overview
As part of the City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement (CRSTS) Bus Pinch Point program to deliver bus and highway improvements on the A6, Stockport Council is developing proposals to provide parking lay-bys on Buxton Road.
The lay-bys could accommodate demand for car parking which is currently occurring on-street and effectively reducing the A6 to one running lane whilst the vehicles are parked. The lay-bys would better regulate traffic flow and reduce delay experienced in these locations along this high-frequency bus corridor. It is proposed that parking restrictions would apply to the lay-bys such that parking would be limited to 1hr between 8am and 6pm Monday to Saturday, with no return within an hour; parking would be unrestricted outside of these times. This would be consistent with restrictions which currently apply to nearby lay-bys on the A6.
Bus Pinch Point - A6 Lay-bys
The following locations have been identified:
- Extension of the existing parking lay-by located in between Gladstone Road and Boothby Street in order to accommodate up to two additional vehicles.
- Provision of a 12m parking lay-by outside 431 to 437 Buxton Road (adjacent to Bonis Crescent) to accommodate up to two vehicles. This would require relocation of the existing bus stop in this location further to the north such that it would be located just south of the junction of Boothby Street with the A6.
Consultation responses must be received by 9th of May 2025.
