As shown on the drawing, the alternative option comprises a segregated cyclist and pedestrian signal-controlled crossing between Foxland Road and Broadway. This would be staggered to allow pedestrians to cross the road in two stages, with a widened central reserve providing a wating area. To accommodate the widened central reserve, the laybys and kerb lines on the southbound carriageway will need to be realigned. The crossing being staggered also reduces the time that traffic would need to be stopped on the A34.

Two school bus laybys, one on either side of the carriageway, would also need to be relocated. The northbound bus stop would be moved approximately 40m to the north and would be positioned in the existing layby between driveways. The southbound bus stop and layby would be moved approximately 50m south.

Segregated pedestrian and cycle links between the new crossing and both school campuses would be provided, as well as a connection to the route along the west side of the A34 between the school and Cheadle Royal. The advisory southbound cycle lane that starts on the A34 carriageway just south of Gatley Road traffic lights would be completely removed and the lane markings would be changed to widen the running lanes.

For the link to the Foxland Road campus, two mature trees would need to be removed – this is a significant reduction from the tree removal that would have been required for the new subway scheme. Additional space would be provided for pedestrians and cyclists at the eastern end of Foxland Road by closing the existing turning area to vehicles to improve safety at school start and finish times. A new vehicle turning area could be provided at the school entrance as originally planned.

The existing Broadway / A34 junction would have to be realigned to create space for the new crossing. This would be constructed as a give-way junction (similar to other junctions on the A34) and would tighten up the turn into Broadway, which should help slow vehicle speeds as they come off the A34. A raised carriageway at the Broadway / Kingsway service road junction will be built which should also help slow traffic entering Broadway.

Near The Kingsway School pupil entrance a Toucan crossing will be built to allow pedestrians and cyclists to cross the road safely. This new location will be better for pupils accessing the school coming from the east.

We would like to hear your views on the proposals, specifically to what extent you agree or disagree with them. Please view them and provide your feedback via the link at the bottom of this page. The consultation period is running until 21st December.

All responses to this engagement will be considered prior to any implementation taking place, which would be planned for 2027 in co-ordination with our wider A34 Corridor Improvement Plan works.
