This project proposes to provide high-quality walking and cycling facilities linking the new Town Centre West developments, Interchange, Trans-Pennine Trail (TPT), Stockport Station, Castle Street, Stockport College and Edgeley Park.  It can also form part of longer distance trips using the TPT into the Town Centre or to Heaton Mersey. The proposals are summarised below.

Shield Street Sparrow Crossing

  • A Sparrow (parallel pedestrian and cyclist) crossing is proposed to replace the existing Toucan (shared) crossing on King Street West between Gradwell Street and Shield Street.
  • A raised carriageway is proposed at the Gradwell Street junction, where there would be a level surface for pedestrians and cyclists to cross Gradwell Street and motorists would give way to cyclists.

King Street West / Shaw Heath

  • A segregated route is proposed for pedestrians and cyclists along the west side of King Street West and Shaw Heath between the proposed Shield Street Sparrow Crossing and Moseley Street, to provide a continuous route.
  • A raised carriageway is proposed at the Chatham Street junction where there would be a level surface for pedestrians and cyclists to cross.
  • At Bowdon Street, a continuous footway / cycleway is proposed to improve accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists. The existing resident parking will be retained.
  • This proposed route includes the closure of Bengal Street to vehicular traffic at the Shaw Heath junction. A walking and segregated cycling connection is proposed on Bengal Street to link to Shaw Heath, with a widened footway. This is to enhance walking and cycling connectivity between Edgeley and Stockport Station. Moseley Street is proposed to be reopened to traffic at the current closure point for access to Bengal Street and with parking relocated from Bengal Street.
  • The existing refuge island outside the former Bluebell Hotel will be retained in a modified form.
  • A raised carriageway is also proposed at the Station access (subject to agreement with Network Rail) to provide a level walking surface for pedestrians.

Stockport Station Sparrow Crossing

  • A Sparrow (parallel pedestrian and cyclist) crossing is proposed to replace the existing Toucan (shared) crossing on Shaw Heath between Bengal Street and Moseley Street with improved segregated cycle links to connect between the Driver John Axon foot and cycle bridge and Bengal Street.
  • The crossing would have an extra wide pedestrian crossing width to allow for large crowds on match days.
  • The carriageway would be narrowed to reduce the crossing distance and the existing central island is to be removed. The existing right turn lane into the Station Approach will be retained, as will the two lane approach to Greek Street roundabout.

Moseley Street

At Moseley Street between Castle Street and Shaw Heath, two options are proposed:

  • The first option retains the left out only from Moseley Street to Shaw Heath, with the introduction of no loading restrictions is proposed on Castle Street to prevent obstructive parking.
  • The second option closes off Moseley Street to traffic at Shaw Heath, allowing pedestrian and cycle access only. Loading is proposed to be permitted on Moseley Street. The introduction of no loading restrictions is proposed on Castle Street to prevent obstructive parking.

Mercian Way / Castle Street

  • The existing Puffin (pedestrian only) crossing on Mercian Way just off Greek Street roundabout is proposed to be upgraded to a Toucan (shared) crossing. The crossing  and paths would be widened to provide extra space for shared use and the carriageway would be narrowed slightly.
  • The crossing is proposed to connect to a segregated route on the east side of Mercian Way leading to Booth Street. The route also links up to the existing Toucan crossing over Mercian Way to Newton Street.

 Booth Street / Mercian Way

  • A Sparrow (parallel pedestrian and cyclist) crossing is proposed over Booth Street at the Mercian Way junction. This connects the proposed segregated route from the Greek Street roundabout crossing and via a proposed link to the existing shared pedestrian and cyclist Moscow Road East path.
  • A Puffin (pedestrian) crossing is proposed over Mercian Way between Booth Street and Newton Street, south of the junction.
  • An improved walking and new cycling connection is proposed between Booth Street and Randolph Place.
  • The above complements an approved scheme for pedestrian and cyclist improvements along Booth Street (to become one-way eastbound for vehicles) and across Shaw Heath to Stockport College, which do not form part of this consultation. The existing controlled crossing near Flint Street will be replaced with an upgraded signalised junction at Shaw Heath / Booth Street to provide pedestrian and cyclist crossing facilities.

Mercian Way

  • A segregated route is proposed for pedestrians and cyclists along the south side of Mercian Way between Booth Street and Worrall Street. A raised road surface is proposed at the Bergara Close junction, where there would be a level surface for pedestrians and cyclists to cross Bergara Close and motorists would give way to cyclists.
  • This route would link via quieter, residential streets to Edgeley Park, Alexandra Park and residential areas of Edgeley and Cheadle Heath.
  • The carriageway would be narrowed on Mercian Way, with sufficient space retained to maintain right turn lanes to Booth Street, Bergara Close and Worrall Street. The existing pedestrian refuge east of Bergara Close would also be retained in modified form.
  • The existing parking bay on the southern side of Mercian Way, between Bergara Close and Worrall Street is to be realigned and extended.
  • The existing Toucan (shared) crossing at Arnold Street will be connected to the proposed Mercian Way cycle route by a shared path for pedestrians and cyclists.

Worrall Street

  • A raised carriageway surface is proposed on Worrall Street at the junctions of Mercian Way and James Street, as well as narrowing of the junctions to calm traffic, provide an at level crossing facility. The existing speed cushions are proposed to be removed.
