Dale Street and Cheadle Old Road
These works are designed to improve access to Edgeley Park and Alexandra Park which are recognised as being important green spaces for residents. They are divided by Dale Street which is a traffic calmed 20mph road but is still an important local distributor and bus route. Hardcastle Road and Cheadle Old Road form an extension of the proposed Edgeley Active Travel Corridor towards Cheadle Heath. We are aware of concerns in the area around linkage, between the parks, vehicle speeds on Dale Street in the vicinity of the parks, the route through Alexandra Park on Cheadle Old Road and the condition of the Reservoir Road path.
Measures are proposed to improve safety for pedestrians crossing Dale Street between Edgeley Park and Alexandra Park and for cyclists following the Hardcastle Road – Cheadle Old Road route. These include:
- Tightening and raising the carriageway at the junction of Dale Street, Hardcastle Road and Cheadle Old Road to calm traffic, provide an at level crossings facility and shorten crossing distances for pedestrians.
- A Zebra crossing to the south of this junction on Dale Street, linking Alexandra Park and Edgeley Park.
- Double yellow lines on Cheadle Old Road on the approach to Alexandra Park to maintain access into the park.
- The barrier control at the park entrance is to be replaced with a drop down bollard to allow better cycle access, including for cycles with trailers and adapted cycles.
Reservoir Road Path
This path forms a useful route for pedestrians and cyclists between Hardcastle Road and Stockholm Road via Moscow Road East. As such it is an important link in the local active travel network. Proposals for this path are:
- Redesign as a shared use path with amended barrier control, signage and surfacing.
- Relocation of lighting to the edge of the path to maximise the available space for pedestrians and cyclists.
- Introduction of double yellow lines at the end of Reservoir Road to prevent obstruction of access to the path by parked vehicles.
Stockholm Road / Adswood Road Junction
Edgeley, Adswood and Davenport all contain extensive networks of quieter residential streets that are attractive for on-carriageway cycling. They lack linkage however, with the busy Adswood Road forming a barrier to travelling between them. This was recognised in the past with provision of a pedestrian and cycle route and uncontrolled crossing improvements between Rostrevor Road and Stockholm Road. It is proposed to improve on this past work to provide a much higher quality facility including signals at the Stockholm Road / Adswood Road junction. This will also help drivers exiting Stockholm Road onto Adswood Road and will provide controlled pedestrian facilities. Specific proposals are:
- A CYCLOPS (Cycle Optimised Protected Signals) junction at the junction of Adswood Road with Stockholm Road. A CYCLOPS gives cyclists their own safe route around the junction, separated from pedestrians and vehicles.
- A segregated route for pedestrians and cyclists on the east side of Adswood Road between Rostrevor Road and Newsham Road, and a shared use path over the railway bridge between Newsham Road and Vicarage Road. At Vicarage Road cyclists can leave and enter the carriageway to an existing raised junction table. Further segregated cycle facilities will allow access to the Cyclops junction from and to the carriageway of Stockholm Road. An existing shared use path on the western side of Adswood Road also leads to the junction and links to existing on-road cycle lanes on Adswood Road west of Rostrevor Rd.
Rostrevor Road
Provision of a Zebra crossing on Rostrevor Road to provide access to and from St Ambrose RC Primary School.
