Stockport Town Centre West – Active Travel

Closes 7 Dec 2025

Approved Stockport Town Centre West Active Travel Links – Not for Consultation

This project was consulted on and approved in 2024 as part of the ‘A6 Improving Journeys’ project, but funding was not available to deliver all the proposals. However, this work is considered to be of high value in improving cycle and pedestrian access on the key western gateway to the Town Centre.

The Heaton Norris Recreation Ground scheme includes:

  • Widening and resurfacing the existing shared-use path at Heaton Norris Recreation Ground to be fit for walking and cycling, relocating stone setts along edges.

The Heaton Lane Roundabout and the Riverside Path scheme includes:

  • Upgrading the segregated routes on Travis Brow, the south side of Heaton Lane and the roundabout.
  • Sparrow (parallel pedestrian and cyclist signal crossing) crossing on King Street West, a Tiger (parallel pedestrian and cyclist zebra crossing) on the western arm of Heaton Lane and a Zebra (pedestrian only) on the eastern arm of Heaton Lane.
  • Shared-use route for pedestrians and cyclists between King Street West Sparrow crossing and Chestergate.
  • Existing shared-use path along the River Mersey towards Brinksway to be improved.
  • Works to be delivered as part of Stockport 8 development including a Toucan crossing at Viaduct Street / Daw Bank Junction.

Please note the approved schemes referred to are subject to funding and further detailed design.
